Mineral Classification Scheme

We are pleased to be able to offer you a free Mineral Classification Scheme, the same one we use in MinIdent-Win. This comes in the form of a Microsoft Access file. It can be opened in the hierarchical tree viewer and editor "Treelist Editor" , which is available at GeoreferenceOnline.

The scheme we have adopted for MinIdent-Win combines the two approaches commonly used in mineral classification schemes, that is, division on the basis of chemical composition on the one hand and crystal structure on the other. These divisions exist at various hierarchical levels within the scheme and alternative paths may be followed in some cases through that hierarchy. Nevertheless, it is simple to use and easy to visualize. One other great advantage of our system is that it includes all of the more than one thousand unnamed minerals in our database and, as far as possible, places each of them in the appropriate division with the hierarchy.
